Ukraine’s Front Line Ghost Town

Glasnost Gone

Taken by Radio Free Europe photojournalist Andriy Dubchank, here’s some recent photos of the abandoned town of Shyrokyne. Located on Ukraine’s southern coastline, it’s situated on the front line, close to the Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

Held predominately by Ukrainian forces, its been devastated by Russian artillery, with virtually no house, or building left undamaged by shelling. To stop any possible Russian sea landing, the beach now resembles a scene from WW2, with mines, concrete blocks and barbed wire entanglements. In reality it’s really a large village, with a population before its wholesale abandonment in 2015, of around 2,000 people.
