Military spokesman Vladislav Seleznyov told The Washington Post that one serviceman died and a second one was injured. Seleznyov also told The Post that there was a truck flying the Russian flag that was blocking the base but did not specifically say if the shots came from Russian forces.
Interfax news agency, though, reports that it was Russian forces who attacked the base in Simferopol.
“We are being stormed. We have about 20 people here and about 10 to 15 others, including women,” one Ukrainian serviceman told Fifth Channel television, according to The Independent.
A military spokesman reportedly told Interfax that “they want us to put down our arms, but we do not intend to surrender.”
